A Mindful Multi-Generational Family Home In Clifton Hill

A Mindful Multi-Generational Family Home In Clifton Hill

This amazing Clifton Hill home occupies a uniquely huge, 80 metre-prolonged block for Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs.

But the sizing also posed a problem for Clare Cousins Architects, who were being requested to design a new house for a pair and their 3 teenage daughters.

‘The consumers expected a dwelling that could accommodate not only their daily life, but also be the upcoming house for an ageing dad or mum and traveling to family members,’ director Clare Cousins says.

To stay clear of disrupting the heritage search of the area, the style took cues from the site’s present publish-war cottage. Its old bricks have been salvaged and included in the house’s identity, ‘offering a perception of permanence and minimal-servicing durability’.

Just one of the most striking components of Esplanade Residence is its compartmentalised structure, outlined by curved partitions and distinctive wings — which merge at the heart of the property.

The entry is set back again from the footpath guiding a cost-free-standing ‘utility building’ adorned with hit-and-overlook brickwork. It suppliers bikes and photo voltaic battery storage, but Clare notes how this clever addition also guarantees privateness for the front courtyard and northern wing of children’s bedrooms.

The proprietors requested that the home seem ‘at ease’ amid the predominantly one-storey encompassing households. This guide to a discrete 2nd ground that serves as the adult’s area, that includes the major bedroom and examine. There is also self-contained studio at the rear primed for visitors.

Within, sustainably sourced blackbutt timber complements the light-weight-stuffed living spaces. And the moody eco-friendly joinery in the kitchen incorportates one of the family’s favourite colors.

The client’s enjoy of gardening was also central to the undertaking. Walled gardens are broken up all-around the sculptural architecture and a successful yard is the purposeful centrepiece of the backyard.

‘The elongated plan weaves the house and the Fiona Brockhoff-intended back garden jointly, providing several out of doors configurations and vistas from all rooms of the residence, even though remaining sympathetic to its heritage context,’ Clare describes.

Esplanade Home showcases how considerate dwelling layout can regard the past, even though remaining firmly anchored in the present — and guaranteeing relevance effectively into the future.
